A freshers’ reception and graduates’ farewell ceremony was organised by the GEB department on 5 April, 2012 at the TSC auditorium. The programme was organized by the students of 11th batch (session 2011-2012) to welcome the new coming 12th batch students and bid farewell to the recently graduated 6th batch students. Prof Dr Aftab Uddin, Chairman of the department, inaugurated the ceremony. The VC of University of Dhaka, Prof Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique spoke as the Chief Guest and the Dean of Biological Sciences, Prof Dr. Shahid Akhter Hussain was the special guest. Prof Dr. M. Anwar Hossain from the department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology was present on the occasion as the guest of honour. The formal ceremony began with speech from the guests, teachers and students of both the new and graduate batch. Supernumerary professor Dr. Rafiqur Rahman gave a speech highly lauded by all. A cultural programme organized by the students of the department included short play, songs, dances and presentations. The daylong festivity was immensely enjoyed by all the participants.
MS student of GEB visits Japan: “The Japan Study Programme 2012”

Proyash Roy, an MS student (session 2011-2012) from the GEB department has recently visited Japan as a participant of “The Japan Study Programme 2012”. The programme was organized by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology to aware international students about the current situation of Japan and the Japanese Universities through various activities in Tokyo metropolis and Tohoku region. Proyash was among the 10 Bangladeshi students who were selected to attend this event. The 2 week long programme was focused on the higher education system and scholarship opportunities in Japan, the reconstruction and recovery process after last year’s earthquake and tsunami along with the cultural integrity and site seeing throughout the country. The participants attended seminars held by national and local governments and Universities, visited the disaster-stricken areas and exchanged views with Japanese and international students studying there.

New faculty joins GEB

Md. Riajul Hossain and Nilanjana Paul both joined the department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology on 29 February, 2012 as lecturers.
Md. Riajul Hossain received his bachelors degree from the GEB department and obtained his M.Sc. from the department in 2007. He was a lecturer of biotechnology programme at the department of mathematics and natural sciences of BRAC University. His research interests focus on microbial biotechnology, epigenetics, molecular genetics, neuroscience and medical genetics.
Nilanjana Paul completed her B.Sc. from GEB department in 2009 and received her M.Sc. from the department in 2010. Her research interests include applications of biotechnology in pharmaceutical sectors, development of drugs against fatal diseases, recombinant DNA technology, application of advanced molecular techniques in biotechnology and genome study of plants and animals.
The GEB department hopes that the fresh scholars will add to the emerging areas of expertise in molecular biology and genetics.
Spring festival'12 at GEB department

“Let’s get adorned in the colour of spring, not that of UV”- was the theme of the first spring festival or boshonto boron utshob observed on the GEB premises on 14 February, 2012. The colourful celebration started at noon with a delicious lunch and was followed by a variety of cultural programmes participated by both the teachers and students. Songs, recitations, drama and many other performances surely brought the cheeriness of spring air within the department. The programme ended at around 6 pm with a rejuvenating spirit among the participants.
Saraswati puja celebration by GEB department

This year for the very first time, the students of GEB department arranged 'Bani Archana' ceremony on the occasion of Saraswati Puja on January 28, 2012.The festival devoted to Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, music and art in hindu religion was observed with much colour and festivity. The puja mandap was set up in Jagannath hall grounds. The teachers and students of the department participated in this celebration with great enthusiasm. The ceremony ended with the distribution of prasad.
Celebration of annual picnic'12

The annual picnic of GEB department was organized on 26th January this year at “Meghna Village & Holiday Resort”, Narayangonj. The picnic was arranged by the students of GEB 10th batch with the help of the departmental teachers and other students. Students along with the teachers namely Md. Aftab Uddin (Chaiperson), Rafiqur Rahman, Anwarul Azim Akhand, Mohammad Nazmul Ahsan, S.M. Mahbubur Rashid and Ruhul Kuddus participated in this joyful event. Students and teachers left for the picnic spot at about 8:30 am and reached it after 2 hours of bus journey. Various events including an interesting football match, small game shows were arranged on spot. At noon lunch furnished with delicious food items was served. The daylong activity ended with raffle draw and prizes. All the participants thoroughly enjoyed the whole day.

As the year 2012 begins with fresh hopes, the department of Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology welcomes fresehers’ (batch 12, Session 2011-2012) to start their academic life at DU. This year, a total of 12 students enrolled in the department. The orientation program was held on 7th January, where the teachers of the department and the respective guardians of the students were present. The program started with a warm welcome address by the Chairman Professor Aftab uddin. The other faculty members also spoke on that occasion and the Student advisor Mustak Ibn Ayub, then introduced the fresehers’ to the various aspects of the department. The GEB department expects its students to excel in both academic and extra-curricular activities and hopes them to become valuable assets for not only the department but also for the country. Batch 12 students started their regular classes from 8th January.
GEBC arranges 3rd outreach program '11 with school and college students

The genetic engineering and biotechnology club (GEBC) organized its 3rd outreach programme “My Life, My Decision” on 26 December, 2011. Students from many renowned schools and colleges in Dhaka, including the Maple Leaf International, Mastermind, Notre Dame college, Viqarunnisa Noon college and Holy Cross college participated in the day long programme organized on the department premises. Students from different public and private universities, studying biotechnology and similar subjects, around the country were also invited to the programme. Prof Dr Aftab Uddin, Chairman of the department, presided over the inaugural session and the VC of University of Dhaka Prof Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique spoke as the Chief Guest. Dean of Biological Sciences, Prof Dr. Shahid Akhter Hussain, Prof Dr. M. Anwar Hossain from the department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Public Service Commission (PSC) member Prof Dr. Imran Kabir Chowdhury and many other distinguished scholars also spoke on the occasion. Renowned scientists, namely, Dr. Shah M Faruque, Head, Molecular Genetics Lab. ICDDR, B, Dhaka, Dr. Mahfuzur Sarker, Associate Professor, Biomedical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, Oregon State University, USA and Dr. Kamal Chowdhury, Associate Professor, Department of Biology, Claflin University, USA, Dr. M Akhter Hossain, Senior Scientist, Florey Neuroscience Institute, University of Melbourne, Australia gave presentation on different topics regarding the basics of life sciences. The daylong event also included poster display, quiz competition, experiments and learning molecular biology techniques with fun, followed by prize giving ceremony. The outreach programme was marked with great enthusiasm from the participants at the end of the day.
GEB joins the VibrioNet Consortium as an international partner institute

The Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology department became one of the international partner institutes of VibrioNet, a consortium (http://www.vibrionet.de/en/index.html) organized to collect information on prevalence of human pathogenic Vibrio spp. in bivalve molluscas from natural and retail sources and in seasonal cases of human gastroenteritis and wound infections in Germany. The consortium will focus on various aspects like epidemiology, aetiology, pathogenesis and diagnostics of Vibrio infections. The meeting of the VibrioNet-Project was held at FU Berlin, Germany, from 4 to 5 May 2011. Over 30 VibrioNet members and guest attended the meeting. Dr Shah M Faruque, Senior Scientist,Head, Molecular Genetics Laboratory,International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B) joined the meeting as a representative of Bangladesh. Dr Shah M Faruque is also a part-time faculty of the Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, University of Dhaka.

Prof. Md. Aftab Uddin: new Chairman of the department

Prof. Md. Aftab Uddin became the Chairman of the Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, University of Dhaka from 10th August, 2011. Professor Aftab Uddin joined the deparment in April, 2011 before that he was a full time Professor at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Dhaka. Prof. Md. Aftab Uddin completed his B.Sc and M.Sc in Biochemistry from the University of Dhaka and obtained his PhD from the University of Tokyo, Japan. Prof Aftab Uddin has received several scholarships and awards during his academic career. The former chairperson Dr. Jesmin and other members of the GEB family warmly welcomed the new Chair and wished him a successful tenure.
Fulbright scholar Dr. Ruhul Kuddus joins GEB for 10 months

Dr. Ruhul Kuddus, Associate Professor of Utah Valley University, USA has joined as a Fulbright scholar at the Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, University of Dhaka. In his 10 months stay Dr Kuddus is going to lecture in undergraduate and graduate courses and conduct research. Dr. Kuddus completed his B.Sc. (Biology and Chemistry), M.Sc. (Zoology), University of Dhaka, MS (Biology) from George Mason University, Virginia, USA and obtained his PhD. in microbiology and molecular genetics from University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. Dr. Kuddus served as a scientist at the Tomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute and an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine before joining Utah Valley University where he is currently teaching microbiology, molecular biology and immunology. His research areas include molecular virology, transplantation immunology, bioethics and experimental methods of teaching and learning. Dr. Kuddus was the recipient of the Utah Valley University Scholar of the Year Award for his contributions in research and teaching. He is the author of several books and publications focusing on microbiology and immunology. The GEB members welcomed Dr Kuddus and hope to be greatly benefited from his teaching and professional experiences.
GEB 10 years celebration

The glorious 10 years of the department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology was marked with a grand celebration on January 2011. Established in 2001, the department has come a long way on its journey from its temporary establishment in Science workshop to its own premises in the 6th floor, Science complex building. The two daylong celebrations were inaugurated at Senate building on 24 January, 2011 where the Minister of Agriculture, Begum Matia Chowdhury was present as the Chief Guest and Deputy Minister of Science, Information and Communication technology, Yafes Osman Chowdhury as the Special guest. The inaugural session was presided over by the Chairperson of the department, Dr. Jesmin. The Vice Chancellor of University of Dhaka, Prof Dr. AAMS Arefin Sidduqe, Pro Vice Chancellor Dr. Harun-ur-rashid, Dean of Biological Sciences, Prof Dr. Shahid Akhter Hussain, Professor M. Anwar Hossain and Professor Haseena Khan from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and many other distinguished guests were also present on the occasion. The festivities included a scientific session held at senate building, a colorful rally, students outreach programme, poster and multimedia presentation at department premises and finally a wonderful cultural programme at the TSC auditorium. Through this celebration, GEB department discussed both its achievements in the last 10 years and targets its goals to materialize in future.
